    Foldit Standalone: a video game-derived protein structure manipulation interface using Rosetta

    Summary: Foldit Standalone is an interactive graphical interface to the Rosetta molecular modeling package. In contrast to most command-line or batch interactions with Rosetta, Foldit Standalone is designed to allow easy, real-time, direct manipulation of protein structures, while also giving access to the extensive power of Rosetta computations. Derived from the user interface of the scientific discovery game Foldit (itself based on Rosetta), Foldit Standalone has added more advanced features and removed the competitive game elements. Foldit Standalone was built from the ground up with a custom rendering and event engine, configurable visualizations and interactions driven by Rosetta. Foldit Standalone contains, among other features: electron density and contact map visualizations, multiple sequence alignment tools for template-based modeling, rigid body transformation controls, RosettaScripts support and an embedded Lua interpreter

    Comparison of the international Burn Injury Database nurse dependency tool with the Safer Nursing Care Tool: Observational study

    Background - Safe and effective nurse staffing is widely recognised as an important issue to ensure quality patient care and reduce mortality. There are many nurse dependency tools described in the literature but no gold standard tool that can be used in all specialities. In burn care there are even fewer burn specific tools and none reported for use in the UK to date. The international Burn Injury Database contains routinely collected information about burn injuries including nurse dependency data which so far has not been reported in the literature. Objective -This study aimed to confirm whether the international Burn Injury Database nurse dependency tool can be used to measure nurse dependency in burn services. Methods - Over a two week period, nurses on three burn services scored the nurse dependency of their burn injured patients daily using the international Burn Injury Database nurse dependency tool and Safer Nursing Care Tool. Additionally all the participating nurses were asked to score three fictional case studies using the same two tools to assess inter-rater reliability. Results - There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the international Burn Injury Database nurse dependency tool and Safer Nursing Care Tool scores (ρ = 0.87, 95% CI = 0.82-0.90). The case study scores showed a similar correlation pattern as the daily comparison recordings. The inter-rater reliability between the participants was comparable for both the international Burn Injury Database nurse dependency tool (α =0.74, CI = 0.71 - 0.77) and the Safer Nursing Care Tool (α =0.79, CI = 0.76 - 0.81). Psychological support variable had the weakest correlation with the nurse dependency tools and the lowest agreement between nurses

    Development of a minimization instrument for allocation of a hospital-level performance improvement intervention to reduce waiting times in Ontario emergency departments

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Rigorous evaluation of an intervention requires that its allocation be unbiased with respect to confounders; this is especially difficult in complex, system-wide healthcare interventions. We developed a short survey instrument to identify factors for a minimization algorithm for the allocation of a hospital-level intervention to reduce emergency department (ED) waiting times in Ontario, Canada.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Potential confounders influencing the intervention's success were identified by literature review, and grouped by healthcare setting specific change stages. An international multi-disciplinary (clinical, administrative, decision maker, management) panel evaluated these factors in a two-stage modified-delphi and nominal group process based on four domains: change readiness, evidence base, face validity, and clarity of definition.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>An original set of 33 factors were identified from the literature. The panel reduced the list to 12 in the first round survey. In the second survey, experts scored each factor according to the four domains; summary scores and consensus discussion resulted in the final selection and measurement of four hospital-level factors to be used in the minimization algorithm: improved patient flow as a hospital's leadership priority; physicians' receptiveness to organizational change; efficiency of bed management; and physician incentives supporting the change goal.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We developed a simple tool designed to gather data from senior hospital administrators on factors likely to affect the success of a hospital patient flow improvement intervention. A minimization algorithm will ensure balanced allocation of the intervention with respect to these factors in study hospitals.</p

    Shear Modes, Criticality and Extremal Black Holes

    We consider a (2+1)-dimensional field theory, assumed to be holographically dual to the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom AdS(4) black hole background, and calculate the retarded correlators of charge (vector) current and energy-momentum (tensor) operators at finite momentum and frequency. We show that, similar to what was observed previously for the correlators of scalar and spinor operators, these correlators exhibit emergent scaling behavior at low frequency. We numerically compute the electromagnetic and gravitational quasinormal frequencies (in the shear channel) of the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom AdS(4) black hole corresponding to the spectrum of poles in the retarded correlators. The picture that emerges is quite simple: there is a branch cut along the negative imaginary frequency axis, and a series of isolated poles corresponding to damped excitations. All of these poles are always in the lower half complex frequency plane, indicating stability. We show that this analytic structure can be understood as the proper limit of finite temperature results as T is taken to zero holding the chemical potential fixed.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures, added reference
